THE DEVIL’SHAND

Shoot ’Em Up...   Cowboy!

THE DEVIL'S HAND   ·   DAVID SCHURE

We are consumed with the need to escape.

I was sitting on my patio watching a squirrel go about its business, gathering nuts, doing what it has always known to do, simply trying to survive. There was something strangely profound about watching him. No excess. No distraction. No searching for something beyond what was already there. Just instinct, purpose, and the struggle to make it through another day.

And I found myself wondering: How did we become so complicated?

Here we are, human beings, blessed with consciousness, imagination, love, family, beauty, and so much abundance and yet we can become consumed by the need to escape ourselves. Heroin. OxyContin. Addiction. Anything that promises, even temporarily, to quiet the noise inside our heads. Perhaps that is the torment we have created for ourselves: We have been given so much, yet we are forever reaching for something else. We confuse escape with freedom. We mistake numbness for peace.

The Devil, as they say, is working overtime. But perhaps the most frightening part is that we don't always recognize him. Sometimes he doesn't arrive as a monster. Sometimes he looks like someone we love. Your wife. Your husband. Your child. Your best friend. Or, perhaps most uncomfortably of all, the person staring back at you in the mirror.

The Devil's Hand is not simply about a drug. It is about desire, despair, temptation, gratitude, and the strange contradictions of being human. It asks us to look at the torment we create and the things we reach for when we can no longer bear to sit quietly with ourselves.
