ARTWORK
Hellbound
"Hellbound" channels that intersection of fear and fascination
THE STORY
Growing up in the early 1960s, Sunday evenings had a particular magic for David. He remembers sitting in front of the television, waiting for Walt Disney to begin. The familiar glow of the screen illuminating the living room and carrying a young boy somewhere beyond the ordinary world around him.
Then came The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.
The image of that strange, hellish figure silhouetted against the moonlit sky frightened David, but he couldn’t look away. It was an early discovery of something that would stay with him as an artist. The strange beauty that can exist inside fear.
A decade later, Alice Cooper gave that fascination a new language. The darkness was louder now, part horror, part theater, part rebellion and David was drawn to it all over again.
HELLBOUND brings those memories together. His childhood fear, an adolescent fascination, and an image that lived quietly in David’s imagination for more than half a century before finally finding its way onto the canvas.
