Mixin The Colors by David Schure

Mixin' the Colors

Some colors are meant to be mixed.

THE STORY

Now this is the magic!

Inspired by Iggy Pop’s 1993 song Mixin’ the Colors from American Caesar, this work carries a meaning for David that reaches far beyond music.

David and his wife fell in love in 1979, at a time when an interracial relationship could still invite judgment, discomfort, and prejudice from the world around them. But what others might have seen first as difference, they simply experienced as love. They chose one another and continued choosing one another as the years became decades.

For David, Mixin’ the Colors is a reflection on that life together. Two people came from different backgrounds and built something entirely their own, their lives becoming inseparable through love, family, struggle, joy, sacrifice, and time. Like colors on a canvas, neither loses what makes it distinct; instead, each is changed and enriched by the presence of the other.

There is something quietly powerful in looking back at a love that began when the world was less accepting and realizing that, while the world around them changed, the essential thing between them did not. They loved each other then. They love each other now.

Mixin’ the Colors is ultimately not a statement about race as much as it is a deeply personal portrait of devotion as a tribute to the woman David has loved since 1979 and to a lifetime spent creating something beautiful together.
